1692 the anonymous A. Boogert only recognised as a Dutch artist created one of the most comprehensive colour charts to date. With over 800 hand written pages and colour charts Boogert's book details tonal and hue differentiations in watercolour by adding varying levels of water in 1,2, and 3 parts. The astonishing collection entitled ' Traite Des Couleurs Servant a la Peinture a L'eau' produced during the golden age of Dutch painting was put together for educational reason to act as a guide for all aspiring artists. Unfortunately only 1 copy of the book is thought to exist however Boogert's efforts were not in vain as images below illustrate extracts of the book with many more available on-line.
